Somatic psychotherapy
We are embodied creatures, who experience life through our wholeness - our emotions and thoughts as well as our nervous systems, our movements, our senses, our sensations.
Somatic Psychotherapy is a way of exploring our experience through our wholeness, as experience unfolds in the present moment.
Our breath, our heart beat, our patterns of muscle tension and release, our expressive gestures, are all forms of communication and response with meaning and value in psychotherapy. Our bodies are wise, often perceiving, intuiting, and synthesizing before our cognitive thinking makes sense of the moment.
The ground of Katrina’s somatic practice is the lineage of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Hakomi. Hakomi was developed by Ron Kurtz with Dr. Pat Ogden and colleagues. Dr. Ogden then developed Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, with a particular focus on distinct ways of working with Trauma vs Attachment Injuries.
These lineages root into Buddhist and Taoist principles - nonviolence, mindfulness, unity, mind-body-spirit holism, organicity, and (SP added) relational alchemy.
SP provides a titrated, consent-based body-centered approach for healing trauma, relational trauma, complex trauma, dissociation, and early attachment/development-based forms of suffering.
Katrina began training in Hakomi in 1999, and in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in 2003. She is a Certified Advanced Practioner of SP, an Approved SP Consultant, and Trainer of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
Katrina weaves SP and Hakomi with extensive training in Movement and Embodied Arts in therapy and in improvisational group contexts: Dance Movement Therapy, Movement Based Expressive Arts, Body Mind Centering, Experiential Anatomy, Authentic Movement, Yoga Teacher Training, Breath work, Vocal Training, Soul Motion Contemplative Improvisational Dance Teacher training & practice, woven with studies in embodied play, theater improvisation, and vocal improvisation.
