Grief and movement

To be human is be acquainted with grief. Perhaps, it is more accurate to say that to be alive is to be acquainted with grief, because grief is not only a human experience - I’m certain that our other animal kin also are familiar with this current. And, what of trees? How does a lone standing tree in a clear cut experience that aloneness where once there was a vibrant interbeing of community and communication?

There is much sorrow in our collective these days, and sorrow is also a deeply potent emotional experience. Sorrow lets us know what matters to us, what is of the deepest importance. Sorrow clarifies our values. Sorrow is a compass for our movement.

And, movement is a supple-making ceremony of living. When we move, we come out of freeze, out of immobilization, out of bracing, out of collapse. When we move we loosen, we unfurl, we breathe more deeply and with a longer exhalation. Movement is Life, is Health, is freedom, is liberation praxis.

Micromovement is intimacy with our own experiencing. Micromovement is a practice of reclaiming home in our bodies. Micromovement is nuance and subtlety with our own tactile, sensory interiority, and therefore is freedom from exile. You could try it now, dear human, a little movement that expands, or relaxes down and back, or lifts or lengthens, or touches the ground, or turns and undulates. Something little and small, like the turn of the bones in the spine in your neck, or the wiggle of toes…
